BHP Billiton Iron Ore has an overriding commitment to sustainable development and it pursues this through the effective management of Health, Safety, Environment and Community activities.

Our commitment to sustainable development is reflected in the BHP Billiton Charter, which is supported by a Sustainable Development Policy (PDF 39KB) and implemented through the HSEC Management Standards and the Guide to Business Conduct.

Sustainable development has very clear business returns and is fundamental to the Company’s long term success.

Health & Safety

The health and wellbeing of employees and contractors remains our highest priority and we are committed to ensuring that safety is not compromised during the implementation of the growth to 152Mtpa and beyond.

We will continue working to improve our safety performance with the ultimate goal of Zero Harm.

Environment

To achieve its sustainability goals BHP Billiton Iron Ore incorporates a variety of environmental management systems focusing on energy use, water conservation, land management, air emissions (including greenhouse gas and ozone depletion), hazardous and other waste management, and closure and rehabilitation into is operations.

These systems are designed to minimise the environmental impact of the Company's operations through policy, planning, implementation and monitoring and are certified to the international standard, ISO 14001. Surveillance audits are also conducted every six months.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore continually aims to improve its sustainable business practice by incorporating innovation and research and design for cleaner production and eco-efficiency.
